In Vitamin D is an important micronutrient with major health benefits, including improved immunity, keeping bones strong, absorbing calcium and working with parathyroid glands. The parathyroid glands work minute to minute to balance the calcium in the blood by communicating with the kidneys, gut and skeleton. When there is sufficient calcium in the diet and sufficient active Vitamin D, dietary calcium is absorbed and put to good use throughout the body. If calcium intake is insufficient, or vitamin D is low, the parathyroid glands will ‘borrow’ calcium from the skeleton in order to keep the blood calcium in the normal range.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that you can get from vitamin D-rich foods, supplements and through sun exposure. Obesity is a risk factor for vitamin D deficiency; this is likely because your daily requirement for vitamin D depends on your body size. Getting adequate amounts of vitamin D may enhance weight loss, decrease body fat and limit weight gain.

Additionally, vitamin D can increase levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that affects everything from mood to sleep regulation. Serotonin plays a role in controlling your appetite and can increase satiety, reduce body weight and decrease calorie intake. Vitamin D may aid weight loss by altering the storage and formation of fat cells and increasing levels of serotonin. Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy and helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. Vitamin B-12 has been linked to weight loss and energy boosts. Vitamin B-12 plays a major role in a number of the body’s essential functions, including DNA synthesis and the formation of red blood cells. It also helps the body convert fats and proteins into energy and aids in the breakdown of carbohydrates. B-12 deficiency can lead to several ailments, most notably megaloblastic anemia, which is caused by a low red blood cell count. The most common symptom of megaloblastic anemia is fatigue.

Some symptoms of a B12 deficiency include:

  • Tingling sensation in the digits
